Keith Urban’s Conversation With His Young Daughter About The Las Vegas Shooting
Tragedy like the one that took place Sunday (10/1) in Las Vegas is hard for anyone to understand, let alone children. Explaining it calls for a delicate parental touch, which Keith Urban attempted as he absorbed the news.
At a Nashville vigil Monday night featuring performances by Keith, Vince Gill, Amy Grant, Alison Krauss and others, the superstar shed some light on how the subject was discussed with daughter Sunday Rose. “I started this morning by finding out about it and being shell-shocked all morning, getting my kids ready for school,” he says in video of the event posted below. “Our nine-year-old, as I was driving her to school this morning, said to me, ‘Dad, you seem quiet.’ I said, ‘Yeah, a lot of people were killed last night,’ and she said, ‘Did you know any of them?'”

When her dad responded that he didn’t, the little girl countered by asking why he looked so sad. “And I said, ‘First of all, these were innocent people horrifically taken, and secondly they’re like family,'” he continued. “It’s the one thing about country music that’s always been at the center of it and that it is community, it’s about community. And so I did know those people in that way. And it just really hit me.”
