Nick Sirianni Is Making Things More Difficult For Jalen Hurts
Nick Sirianni is a good coach. You don’t get a record of 33-13 by accident. He has proven himself to be adept at in game decision making, and compared to most teams he is ahead of the trend when it comes to being aggressive and going for it on 4th down. Those type of head coach things, including in game decisions, time management, and player management, is where he excels as a coach. But one area where he has been receiving criticism is his offensive scheme. In particular how little they use motion. And that flaw in his game, is making things harder than they have to be for Jalen Hurts.
Look around the top offenses in the league. The Niners, Dolphins, Lions, and Ravens all utilize motion at a high rate. But the Eagles have gone in the opposite direction. They are using motion on just 25% of snaps, which ranks dead last in the league. No other team is below 30% and most teams are over 40%.
Nick Sirianni has talked about why he doesn’t use motion like the rest of the league, and was asked again in his Mid Week 15 Press conference.
“There are many different ways you would motion. Sometimes it’s to gather information. Sometimes it’s to set up an advantage, whatever it could be. There are other ways to gather information besides motion that teams do all the time. That’s something that we do. It could be by formation. Just because a guy moves, doesn’t necessarily give you the answer. It could be if a guy is removed from the core, it can give you the answer. If a guy is tight to the core, it gives you an answer. This formation can give you an answer… Now, sometimes the answer is to motion, and so there are some games where we motion more than we don’t. It’s a fair question because we do it less than everybody in the NFL. So, I would say that these last two games have not been up to our standard, but for the past two years we have been one of the best offenses in the NFL, and we’ve been in the same place with motion the entire time.”
Making Things Hard For Jalen Hurts
The problem is, right now Jalen Hurts is being asked to make tougher throws than any QB in the league. Not just in how much he is being asked to throw it downfield, but in the windows he has to fit the ball. More than any team the Eagles rely on their WRs making plays. And often, because of how great they are, they can make plays. But teams like the Dolphins and 49ers have great WRS too. And they still do stuff to scheme them open, giving Purdy and Tua an easier time getting the ball to those talented pass catchers.
Look at that Eagles-49ers game. Purdy was hitting wide open guys in space, on relatively short throws. That is not a shot at Purdy, who has shown this year he can hit deep and tight window throws when asked to. Its just recognizing how the Niners scheme made things easier for him and his WRS. And the Eagles are not doing that for Hurts and his WRS. Hurts has the 8th least throws to open WRs with at least 5 yards of separation this season. AJ Brown is as good as any WR at making contested catches. Smith is great at it too. But you shouldn’t have to make it that hard on yourself as much as the Eagles do. And the lack of motion plays into that. We saw the motion get guys open for the Niners when they played the Eagles.
Tim McManus joined The Best Show Ever this week, and said that he thinks the Eagles should use more motion:
“I feel like Sirianni and Brian Johnson get into this pattern where they feel really good about their WRS, and feel like they can win any matchup. I understand that. But is just not as easy for Jalen Hurts to function, as it for other QBs in the league to function… In fact some of those Next Level stats tell you that. When the ball is getting to his target the defender is 3.2 yards on average close to them. Which ranks 28th in the NFL. Even though you have these high powered weapons, they are not gaining the type of separation you would expect. The coaching staff has to do a better job of scheming these guys open, and making it easier on Hurts.”
We know Hurts is capable of making those tough throws. He has proven it. But he is being asked to make those great throws too often. While Tua, Dak, and Purdy get to sometimes just hit wide open guys, Hurts is being asked to be a hero. Like Tim McManus said, the Eagles coaches need to make things easier for him. Not because he is not capable of making the hard throws, but because he shouldn’t have to make them every play. Every other coach does it for their QBs, and there is no good reason for the Eagles to buck that trend.
