MLK 2023 Celebration at the African American Museum
This Monday, January 16th is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day! Spend the day volunteering, giving back and honoring Dr. King’s legacy.
We’re lucky too, because here in Philly, The African American Museum has a number of ways for you to have fun, give back, and honor Dr. King’s legacy all weekend long.
Today, Friday, January 13th: The Big Give
The African American Museum in Philadelphia has partnered with Center for Hope to provide personal care packs to those in Philadelphia experiencing homelessness. The packs include items like warm socks and clean underwear. Also diapers, formula, and feminine hygiene products and more. Join them in their efforts to provide care to those in need this evening from 5:30 pm – 7:30 to pack donated items that will be delivered to the Center for Hope’s men and women’s shelters.
HERE is a list of donations you can drop off at the museum. You can also make a donation using their GIVING page. If you aren’t able to make a donation this weekend, in person item and monetary donations will be accepted through January 31st at the Museum. There is no admission to the museum required to donate.
Saturday, January 14th: Day of Dance
General museum admission on Saturday includes all day dance programing. The museum has partnered with the Philadelphia Ballet to offer ballet and African dance classes for children from 11am-1pm. There will also be performances by PBII dancers and Philadelphia high school students, and a Black Choreographic Voices panel discussion from 1pm to 4pm. Learn more HERE.
Sunday, January 15th: Photo Shoot and Artist Talk with Jamel Shabazz
Join iconic documentary, fashion, and street photographer, Jamel Shabazz in front of the African American Museum in Philadelphia at 1 pm to be a part of his first photo shoot of 2023. Find more details and a suggested dress code for the photo HERE. He’s giving an artist talk from 2pm-4pm. General admission is $5 and signed copies of his books will be available for sale.
Monday, January 16th – Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration and FREE Museum Admission All Day
The African American Museum in Philadelphia will be Empowering the Next Generation of Dreamers all day long. It’s FREE museum admission all day from 10am-5pm, and open to the public. Enjoy permanent and temporary exhibitions, a financial literacy presentation, and even a visit from the Phillie Phanatic! Find all of the details HERE.
