Calder Gardens Planned for September 2025 Opening on the Parkway
A new sanctuary honoring the life and legacy of artist Alexander Calder (1898-1976) is on track to open in September 2025. The new facility at 21st Street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia will be managed through a partnership with the Barnes Foundation.
Calder Gardens pays tribute to the youngest of the Calder family legacy of artists. Alexander Calder’s grandfather constructed the statue of William Penn atop City Hall, and Alexander’s father built Swann Fountain in Logan Square. Alexander is known for his sculpted aerial mobiles.
Much of the artwork at Calder Gardens will be below street grade and will feature subterranean galleries. Along the parkway, guests will encounter a garden-like meadow.
Juana Berrío has been appointed as the inaugural Marsha Perelman Senior Director of Programs. In a statement published in Archinect News, Berrío said the interior and exterior design “provides a perfect context for Calder Gardens to become one of the most innovative and forward-thinking spaces for art and culture today.”
Artforum described the new addition to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway as “an 18,000-square-foot shed-style building designed by Pritzker Prize–winning architects Herzog & de Meuron. [It] will feature landscaping by Piet Oudolf, whose grass and wildflower plantings lend New York’s High Line its natural, idyllic look.”
Calder Foundation President Alexander S. C. Rower noted in a statement, “Calder Gardens is an entirely new type of cultural institution focused on nurturing introspection and personal growth through the art and ideas of my grandfather — one of the most influential artists of the modern era.”
