Top American Dog Breed: French Bulldog

The Top American Dog Breed in the US is French? Sort of. The French Bulldog!

The American Kennel Club released their list of the most popular dog breeds in 2022, and for the first time in 31 years, it's not the Labrador Retriever. The French Bulldog takes the lead, according to the new list from the American Kennel Club which hosts the world's largest registry of purebred dogs.

Here's the top 10:

  1. French Bulldog
  2. Labrador retrievers
  3. Golden retrievers
  4. German Shepherd Dogs
  5. Poodles
  6. Bulldogs
  7. Rottweilers
  8. Beagles
  9. Dachshunds
  10. German Shorthaired Pointers

The American Kennel Club is great (and local)! They host the awesome National Dog Show here at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks. (See photos below from past shows.)

I do think it's worth mentioning though, that depending on how it's reported..  this list can be pretty misleading. To me, a quick glance at this list might imply that French Bulldogs are America's top dog. Keep in mind that the list is from the world's largest registry of purebred dogs. It doesn't at all take into account the majority of dogs living as pets in American households who are mixed breed, or mutts!

Adopt, Don't Shop!

Remember that you can always find a fantastic new family member at your local shelter or rescue. Adopt, don't shop! Locally, the PSPCA, PAWS, and Philly Bully Team are some of my favorite rescues.

The Top American Dog Breed may be the French Bulldog, but the top dog is always the dog asleep on your couch next to you.

National Dog Show

Check out the American Kennel Club's National Dog Show here in Philly every November, usually just before Thanksgiving. Tickets are inexpensive, and they let you pet the dogs! This year, the show will be held November 18th-19th, 2023. Tickets go on sale in June! Then, watch the National Dog Show again when it airs on TV Thanksgiving Day on NBC.

Dogs of The National Dog Show Years Past

The National Dog Show 2022 is this weekend at the Philadelphia Expo Center at Oaks. This annual event features over 2,000 dogs from over 190 breeds.

Head to the show Saturday, November 19th and Sunday, November 20th to see and MEET so many cuties.

Check out the gallery of dogs we've met (and fallen in love with) in years past. <3
