South Philadelphia Block Kicks Off Month-Long Holiday Light Display
People on the block spent November decorating their street into a holiday showcase. Houses glowed with scenes from “Super Mario Brothers” and “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” while an eye-catching “Nutcracker” display stole the show.
CBS News talked to a neighbor and some visitors. “We do it for the neighbors, we love the joy, and we do it for the kids honestly,” said Ryan Targoff, who lives on the block.
“As long as there is no snow we’re good,” Anthony Bercolino said while visiting with his kids.
First-time visitor Desire Diaz loved the neighborhood feel. “I’ve never been here before, so I think this is pretty awesome,” she said.
Vera Dugan, from the neighborhood, thinks the impressive “Nutcracker” house stands out from all the others.
This neighborhood tradition has brightened winter nights for years. Every evening at sunset, the lights come on, letting everyone enjoy the display throughout December. Even in the freezing cold, people walked around with hot cocoa, checking out the lit-up houses. The beautiful display brings tons of Philadelphia families back every year.
You can find this light show between Tasker and Morris Streets. While you can park on nearby streets, taking public transit works better during busy weekend nights.
