Huey Lewis & the News Musical Opening on Broadway in Spring 2024
Huey Lewis & the News will be hitting Broadway in a big way in Spring 2024.
Per Broadway News, the jukebox musical The Heart of Rock and Roll will open on April 22 at the James Earl Jones Theatre. The show features some of the band’s biggest hits. Among them are “The Power of Love,” “Workin’ for a Livin’,” “If This Is It” and more. It first premiered in 2018 at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego.
Lewis said in a statement, “I’ve always been a storyteller, and it’s a thrill to see my songs woven together in service of a fantastic, new story. That it will all take place on the world’s most prestigious stage — Broadway — just makes the ride that much sweeter.”
More Rock and Roll on Stage
Plenty of rock and roll has made its way to Broadway and beyond in recent years. Among them have been musical adaptations of Back to the Future and Almost Famous.
Last week, it was announced The Who's Tommy was being revived on Broadway. The revival, like The Heart of Rock and Roll, will hit New York in the Spring. The show is slated to open on March 28, 2024 at the Nederlander Theatre. Previews begin on March 8.
The Who’s Tommy had a sold-out run in Chicago this summer at the Goodman Theatre. It’s also being dubbed as a “newly reimagined production.” The original run of the production opened on Broadway in 1993 and went on to win five Tony Awards.
Pete Townshend, The Who guitarist/mastermind behind Tommy, is attached to the revival. He said in a statement, “I can’t wait to see how this newly empowered show connects with younger Broadway audiences today.
Townshend added, “I hope the younger ones come, for they will identify in an entirely new and important way with Tommy’s tumultuous life.”
