Newly installed LED architectural lighting on the New Hope-Lambertville Bridge has transformed the 120-year-old structure into an attractive nighttime display over the Delaware River. The blue, green, and red lights were turned on for the first time on Tuesday, April 1.

The landmark bridge connecting New Hope, Pennsylvania, with Lambertville, New Jersey, has been undergoing renovation for more than a year. Work included adding new walkways to enhance accessibility and safety. Also, cleaning and performing masonry repairs. And finally, conducting enhancements to the bridge structure.

Tuesday's bridge illumination ceremony was a celebration for the community.

"We are very, very fortunate the progress of the renovation was pretty much as scheduled," said Laurence Keller, mayor of New Hope Borough, in a statement shared with CBS News Philadelphia.

"How essential these structures are for interstate commerce and the free flow of goods," added Fran O'Connor, New Jersey Department of Transportation commissioner. "They bring Jersey blueberries, peaches, and Taylor Ham or Pork Roll into Pennsylvania. And Hershey bars and Eagles fans into New Jersey."

A plaque was unveiled to officially mark the completion of the bridge renovation project. It acknowledges the bridge's history and commemorates its continued service to the communities of New Hope and Lambertvillle.
