WATCH: Final Performance Of Wanamaker Organ at Macy’s Philadelphia
Macy’s in Center City Philadelphia closed this weekend, and we have a final performance of the very famous Wanamaker Organ in case you missed it.
Macy’s Closing Leaves People in Tears
I live very close and have shopped there for years. The losing is sad on so many levels. Not only was the shopping amazing, but the Wanamaker organ still played every day (except Sundays) at 12p and 5:30p. Do you how fun it is to shop for makeup and hear the incredible organ?
I specially stopped in a few weeks ago before I came into work to see the 12p performance and I cried too. You can check that out HERE.
“It’s emotionally draining because it’s a very emotional day, obviously, it’s a short term farewell to an international icon,” said Peter Richard Conte, Wanamaker Grand Organist.
Organ Plays “Fly Eagles Fly” On Last Weekend
The fact that Philadelphia is such a special town, they had Swoop in attendance and the organist played “Fly Eagles Fly” is just beyond incredible.
Macy’s Closing Leaves Hole For Iconic Organ
The Wanamaker Organ is the largest fully functioning pipe organ in the world, based on the number of playing pipes, the number of ranks, and its weight. It is a concert organ of the American Symphonic School of Design, which combines traditional organ tone with the sonic colors of the symphony orchestra.
Obviously the most use of the organ came from the Christmas Light Show. So many years of people sharing the tradition with their friends and family. I went for years with my friend Elisa and her two boys Otto and Levi, and I’m very happy I got to bring my niece Drew as well. I pray those in charge figure out a solution on how to keep the spirit and tradition alive.
“My best memories were bringing my children here to see everything going on at Christmas time all the shows,” said Joe Bennis from Fort Washington (6ABC.com).
