The BOX: End of Isolation at Eastern State Penitentiary
The BOX is a play that asks us as the audience to re-evaluate methods of punishment and solitary confinement. It’s being performed here Philly for two days only (August 13th and 14th) in the perfect setting of historic Eastern State Penitentiary.
The play underscores both the horror of solitary confinement and the humanity of people subjected to it. It uses stories inspired by true events in an effort to bring awareness to what is occurring in correctional institutions across the country.
Written and directed by Sarah Shourd, who was held in solitary confinement for over 400 days as a political prisoner in Iran. Sarah discovered the prevalence of solitary confinement in the United States and collaborated with other survivors to bring this project to life. Several members of the nine-person cast and crew are formerly incarcerated.
The BOX sold out in San Francisco, Marin County, and Alcatraz Island, and has been re-conceived as a 10 date traveling show.

The Philadelphia performance is presented by The Pulitzer Center in partnership with Abolitionist Law Center and Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site.
As a big fan of Terror Behind the Walls and Bastille Day and all of the fun events Eastern State Penitentiary has hosted in the past, I have to say that I’m even more excited about the organization’s more recent mission to focus on prison reform. This show pairs perfectly with that mission and I feel lucky to have Philadelphia as one of the few cities on this tour.
