‘Operation Varsity Blues’: Netflix Doc Looks At The College Admissions Scandal
Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal, the hybrid-documentary centering around the highly-publicized 2019 college admissions misconduct is now officially streaming on Netflix.
Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman became the poster-children of the scandal. Loughlin and her husband pled guilty to committing fraud to get their daughters into the University of Southern California. Huffman pled guilty to fraud and conspiracy after paying someone $15,000 to correct and improve her daughter’s SAT exam.
Huffman accepted a plea deal, which led to her serve 11 days behind bars, as well as an order to pay a $30,000 fine, complete 250 hours of community service, and serve one year of probation. Meanwhile, Loughlin was sentenced to two months in prison, with her husband Mossimo Giannulli is currently serving a five-month sentence, according to ET.
Brought to you by the same filmmakers who did Fyre, the doc is about Rick Singer, the man at the center of the 2019 college admissions scandal, who persuaded his wealthy clients to cheat the college admissions system. The film combines interviews with recreations of the FBI’s wiretapped conversations between Singer and his clients. Per a press release, Operation Varsity Blues “offers a rare glimpse into the enigmatic figure behind a scheme that exposed what lengths wealthy families would go to for admission into elite colleges, and angered a nation already grappling with the effects of widespread inequality.”
