The Doobie Brothers React to Being Named to 2020 Rock Hall Class
The Doobie Brothers were the lone act from the fans’ ballot to be named to the 2020 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction class and on their first nomination, no less.
Tom Johnston, Patrick Simmons and Michael McDonald spoke with Billboard and the band is beyond thrilled about the honor. Their emotions range from Johnston saying he’s “still pinching myself,” to Simmons admitting he’s “a little overwhelmed” to McDonald saying the honor is “more excitement than an old man can handle.”
The Doobies plan to attend and perform at the induction ceremony, which will also honor current member John McFee and previous members Jeff “Skunk” Baxter, John Hartman, Michael Hossack, Tiran Porter and Keith Knudsen. There are also talks about the possibility of former members performing at the ceremony, too.
“I do keep in touch from time to time with all these guys, so it’s nice we’ll be doing something like this together,” said Simmons. “I know that everybody, even the guys that haven’t been involved with the Doobies for awhile, are all still active and playing. So for us to be together and play again, I think it’s gonna be great. It’s gonna be a real fun time for everybody.”
The Doobies’ Rock Hall induction is the cherry on top of an already busy year. The band has already announced a 50th anniversary reunion tour with McDonald that has now expanded to 53 dates. Before that, The Doobies have an eight-show residency in February at the Venetian in Las Vegas.
