Cyndi Lauper: Check Out New Doc ‘Let the Canary Sing’
Cyndi Lauper is the subject of a new documentary on Paramount+ called Let The Canary Sing.
The documentary covers Lauper’s childhood, her ’80s pop superstar explosion and the evolution of her career and life in the following decades. Let The Canary Sing is directed by Alison Ellwood, who has numerous documentary credits to her name, including 2013’s History of the Eagles and 2020’s The Go-Go’s.
In a statement, Lauper said of the documentary, “Over the years I’ve been asked to do a documentary about my life and work, but it never felt like the right time. Until now. When I first met Alison Ellwood, I knew right away I could trust her to tell my story honestly, which was incredibly important to me, and she succeeded in that. I’d like to thank Alison, the producers, and all of the amazing documentary participants who agreed to be interviewed!”
Some people who agreed to be interviewed can be seen in the trailer below, including Boy George, Billy Porter and Patti LaBelle.
As previously reported, Lauper wasn’t so sure about making a documentary about her life and career. She said before the documentary’s screening at the Tribeca Film Festival in June 2023, “When I was first approached, I said, ‘A documentary? I’m not dead yet!’ But if anybody was going to tell my story – the good, the bad and the ugly; the missteps and the good steps; the triumphs and the not-so-triumphant – it would be Alison Ellwood. She’s a wonderful filmmaker. I feel honored.”
Let The Canary Sing is on Paramount+ now.
