Wawa Snags Bucks, Delaware County Liquor Licenses
A Pennsylvania convenience store chain rose to the top as the winning bidder in a recent Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board auction for two expired restaurant liquor licenses.
Wawa paid $170,000 for an expired liquor license in Bucks County and $300,000 for a Delaware County license, nearly double the average winning bid, according to a BucksCoToday.com report. The two licenses were part of a collection of 20 auctioned off.
Wawa has not stated which store in Bucks County would sell beer. According to company spokesperson Lori Bruce, two Wawa locations in Bucks County sell beer. Across Pennsylvania, the chain has 24 stores that have licenses for beer sales.
Wawa has six months to file a license application with the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board.
Meanwhile, Wawa’s in-state rival, Sheetz, has submitted a proposal in Montgomery County to build a new store and fueling center in Limerick Township. This store would be located at the heavily trafficked intersection of Ridge Pike and Swamp Pike, in the same block as an existing Wawa. According to a 6abc News report, this store would be Sheetz’s first in the greater Philadelphia area, a territory that Wawa has heavily claimed.
