The entire band sat down with CBS News correspondent Anthony Mason and talked for the first time about what happened with Lindsey Buckingham’s exit from the band. Here are the five biggest takeaways.
1. Buckingham’s exit happened because he wouldn’t sign off on their upcoming North American tour.
The recently announced tour was in the works for a year and a half, but Mick Fleetwood said, “It became just a huge impasse and hit a brick wall, where we decided that we had to part company.” Stevie Nicks added, “This team wanted to get out on the road, and one of the members did not want to get out on the road for a year. We just couldn’t agree.”
2. Mike Campbell and Neil Finn aren’t just joining Fleetwood Mac for the tour; they’re really in the band.
Fleetwood went as far as to say, “This is absolutely a new band. This is the new lineup of Fleetwood Mac. Campbell even said, “I’m making this my priority until whenever, you know. We’ll see what happens.”
3. The band wouldn’t commit to saying Buckingham was “fired.”
When asked if Buckingham was “fired,” Fleetwood said the band doesn’t “use that word” because “it’s ugly.” He equates the situation to being “like a marriage that came to an end.”
