Here at BEN FM we celebrate female artists 365 days a year, and especially during March. This is Intern Olivia and I don’t know about you, but I love music videos. I always used to switch between all the music video channels on the TV as a kid (RIP). In honor of Women's History Month this March, I wanted to highlight 5 of the most viewed music videos by female artists!
Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) by Beyonce
This 2008 anthem for the single ladies around the world reached one billion views on YouTube. I love how no matter how long it's been, everyone knows the single ladies dance. It's forever iconic, whether you're single or not!
Bad Romance by Lady Gaga
On her 2009 album, The Fame Monster, “Bad Romance” has gained one billion views on YouTube for its music video. Lady Gaga is a major throwback artist for me, especially Bad Romance. Although it's about unhealthy relationships, I'll always crank the volume up when it comes on.
...Baby One More Time by Britney Spears
The queen of pop, Britney Spears, has one billion views for her 1999 hit, “…Baby One More Time”. This Y2K anthem went on to set the stage for pop stars in the years to come. I break out my inner Britney Spears when ever I hear this song; my impression isn't very good but that's besides the point...
Roar by Katy Perry
Released on YouTube in 2013, "Roar" reached 4 billion views on video-sharing platform. Taking place in the jungle, the song explores themes of empowerment and features so many cute animals (which I love).
Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) by Shakira
As the official theme song for the FIFA World Cup in 2010, Shakira racked up 4 billion views on this mid-2000s classic. I feel like you can't help but sing along and dance when this comes on, it's so catchy!
Not Female Artists, but WOW. An Honorable Mention...
This last one doesn't match the theme but I just couldn't help not mentioning it. "Baby Shark" by PinkFong has a whopping 15 million views on YouTube! Some may roll their eyes at this song or even do the silly dance along with the lyrics but I really just can't believe 15 billion people watched this music video. Let's have a moment of silence for all of the parents who probably hear this at least 1 million times a day.
As we approach the weekend, let this year's (and every year's) Women's History Month and International Women’s Day, which is March 8th, be a reminder of all the achievements women have made and continue to make all around the world, through all walks of life. Female artists and women in general rock!
p.s.. Kristen has a bunch of female artists cued up on BEN all day on Saturday. Be sure to tune in!
