Philadelphia is the Worst City for Sleep
Philadelphia is the worst US city for sleep, according to a study by Sleep Junkie.
They listed The Best Cities for Sleep in the US, and surprisingly, Philadelphia was last on the list.
The study used data on light pollution and transport noise in 21 cities across the country. They also conducted a survey of residents to find the percentage of people in each city who were able to regularly get 7+ hours of sleep, who say they are getting a good night’s sleep, and the percentage of people who believe they live in a peaceful environment. Combining all of these factors, Philly came in dead last in overall sleep quality. Who knew?
According to Sleep Junkie, Philadelphia, “has the 4th highest amount of light pollution of the cities studied.” They also found that just 1/4 of adults in Philly got the recommended 7+ hours of sleep (8.4% less than the national average). To add insult to injury, even with the little sleep we get, Philadelphia respondents reported the 2nd lowest quality of sleep. Only 40% of Philadelphians who responded to the survey said that they get regular, good quality sleep.
The cities at the bottom of the list were:
- Philadelphia, PA
- Pheonix, AZ
- Austin, TX
The best cities for sleep were:
- San Antonio, TX
- San Francisco, CA
- Indianapolis, IN

It sounds like we could use some help. Sleep Junkie also included a list of tips for getting better sleep. Some of their suggestions were to limit caffeine, eat a healthy diet, reduce TV time in the bedroom, and exercise regularly. (Easier said than done.)
