World Reacts to Philadelphia Phillies Winning Game 1 of the World Series

It was like watching a movie. The Houston Astros seemed to be doing just fine during Game 1 of the World Series, going towards an easy win. Going into the fourth inning, Houston had a 5-0 lead, and starting pitcher Justin Verlander precluded any baserunners.

But, the Phillies brought a truly incredible comeback at Minute Maid Park, 6-5 in 10 innings. So incredible!

    Joon Lee of ESPN has an interesting graph! It shows the Phillies’ incredible comeback in the 9th. We’re glad there is a 9th, right? Hopefully nobody left this game early. I’ve seen people leave games early before, only to find out that they missed the chance to witness history in the making.

    ESPN Stats offers an impressive statistic. They say, “The Phillies are the sixth team all-time to overcome a five-run deficit to win a World Series game. Dusty Baker has now been on the losing end of the last two, also dropping Game 6 of the 2002 series vs the Angels.” What can I say? Don’t doubt the Phillies.

    Jeff Passan of ESPN talks about how unbelievable this win was to witness. He says it “doesn’t make much sense.” True! But we’ll take it. A win is a win! Besides, it made the win that much more dramatic, and now, the world is talking about the Phillies.

    ESPN Sports Center says the “Phillies are the first team in 20 years to rally from down 5 and win a World Series game.” That just shows that this team is very special. Don’t call us the underdogs.

    According to Baseball Reference, “Teams that have won Game 1 have won the World Series 63 percent of the time.” I’ll take those odds! Not to get our hopes up, but that says something. Fingers crossed we can be part of that 63 percent.
