Being from the state of New Jersey this isn’t a list I’m happy to report on, considering two cities in New Jersey have been considered some of the biggest murder capitals in the United States.

Neighborhoodscout.com put together a list of the top 30 cities in the country with the highest murder rates. The website limited their research to cities with 25,000 or more people.  Data used for this research are the number of murders reported to have occurred in each city, and the population of each city.

The study found that St. Louis was the worst in the country and jumped from the number three spot last year to the number one spot this year. “St. Louis, MO reported 263 murders, which is an increase of 36% compared to last year with a murder rate of .87 per 1,000 population,” said the study.

There were 14 new cities on the list of 30 this year. Two cities in New Jersey, one in Pennsylvania, and one in Delaware did make this year’s list.
