Meet Shavonne Murphy, Fitness Manager, Wissahickon’s Kroc Center.
The Salvation Army’s state-of-the-art Kroc Center is a beacon of hope for seniors who face months of solitude and inactivity. Created by the Center’s fitness staff with our older neighbors in mind, the “Golden Gems” program meets three times weekly to get senior citizen members involved and active. Boasting more than 100 members, the Golden Gems is one of The Salvation Army’s largest programs for seniors in the Philadelphia area. That’s only half the story…the Center houses an olympic size swimming pool, 2-floors of exercise equipment and activity, fitness classes and an outdoor walking path and garden and a playground for kids (day care too)!
The Senior program was conceptualized by Shavonne as a method of keeping seniors more in tune with their health, and removing the intimidation factor that many associate with exercise. Physical activity is an integral part of the club, and members participate in regular health check-ups and wellness education. Unlike many other fitness programs for seniors, all of The Salvation Army Kroc Center’s fitness specialists have earned their degree in either sports medicine or kinesiology, allowing them to provide health and wellness assessments to the seniors far beyond the abilities of a personal trainer
