Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has resumed operations from Philadelphia for the first time in over 15 years.

According to a CBS News Philadelphia report, the Norwegian Jewel docked at the PhilaPort Cruise Terminal early on Thursday, April 16, and departed that evening. A group of Philadelphia mummers were on hand to greet guests as they boarded the first cruise to depart from the terminal.

While the terminal is still undergoing construction, officials said the work would not impact cruise operations this year.

More than 2,300 passengers are expected to set sail from the PhilaPort Cruise Terminal as the $50 million project advances toward completion.

City and state officials anticipate the terminal project will significantly enhance the Philadelphia economy. Once the cruise terminal is fully operational by early summer, it could generate approximately $300 million, according to CBS News Philadelphia's reporting.

"We are estimating 2,100 new direct and indirect jobs, with the potential for almost $295 million in economic impact in the city of Philadelphia," Mayor Cherelle Parker said during last Thursday's launch event. "Yes, this is a big deal."

"Norwegian Cruise Line's return to Philadelphia marks an exciting and meaningful milestone for us and the region," said Marc Kazlauskas, president of NCL, in a news release. "With Norwegian Jewel leading our reintroduction and Norwegian Pearl following her later this year, we're proud to bring our signature freedom and flexibility back to this incredible city and deliver the exceptional experiences our guests know and love."

In the fall, NCL will offer voyages to Canada and New England that depart from Philadelphia. Port officials said they anticipate expanding cruise service with more sailings and future cruise itineraries.

Available on select Norwegian Jewel sailings this year, the Philadelphia Cruisetour is also featuring guided visits to Philadelphia sites including Elfreth's Alley, the Betsy Ross House, Christ Church, Carpenter's Hall, the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, along with time at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
