It's been named the "most walkable city," and this year, it's ready to shine on the world stage.
Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love, was named the Most Walkable City in the United States in the USA TODAY 10 Best Readers' Choice Awards. In its recognition of Philadelphia, USA TODAY editors said, "Philadelphia is beloved for its cultural and historical attractions, and its walkability is appreciated by both residents and visitors. Tourists enjoy strolling through Center City, Philadelphia's downtown district that contains several gorgeous neighborhoods, including historic and charming Old City and Rittenhouse Square."
A Visit Philadelphia blog post notes the straightforward navigability of Center City Philadelphia, which spans 26 blocks from the Delaware River on the east to the Schuylkill River on the west.

"Much of Philadelphia's walkability is attributable to 17th-century city planner William Penn, who envisioned the green spaces, public squares, and grid of streets that comprise Philadelphia's downtown. Numbered streets run perpendicular north-south and east-west (many named for trees, like Walnut, Locust, and Spruce)," according to Visit Philadelphia.
This year, the city is set to shine on the world stage as it hosts six FIFA World Cup matches at Lincoln Financial Field, including Brazil on June 19 and France on June 22. Additional sporting events that Philadelphia will host this year include NCAA March Madness, the MLB All-Star Game, and the PGA Championship.
Philadelphia is also taking part in the semiquincentennial (250th anniversary) celebration of the United States this year. Nearly 68 National Historic Landmarks, including Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, support the city's central role in American history.
