If you’re looking for a cozy, community-focused way to celebrate the season in Northwest Philly, Roxborough has you covered. Happy Holidays from ROX is back with a four-week celebration that turns Ridge Avenue and Gorgas Park into a festive winter wonderland. From Black Friday through December, you can enjoy the Roxborough Tree Lighting, holiday pop-up market, Art on the Ridge gallery, Santa’s arrival on a firetruck, seasonal food and drink, and plenty of twinkling lights and decorations. Admission is free, and you can pay as you go for food, beverages, and shopping, making it an easy, low-pressure way to soak up holiday cheer close to home.
This year introduces a big new highlight: the first-ever Gorgas Park Evergreen Enchantment. Running November 28 through December 21, this activation transforms Gorgas Park into the festive heart of Roxborough. Families can wander through the Evergreen Christmas Tree Maze, a glowing path of trees adorned with hundreds of lights and fun facts about the history of Christmas trees, ending in a special photo-op at the center. There’s also the Evergreen History Hunt, a digital scavenger hunt that uses QR codes on wreaths around the park to share stories about Gorgas Park’s past, its 250+ trees, award-winning gardens, and local wildlife, with weekly prize drawings for participants. A Toys for Tots drop-off runs throughout the Enchantment, giving neighbors a simple way to give back.
On weekends, Gorgas Park comes alive with special events: a holiday light spectacular with live music, a Day of Remembrance with the 21st Ward Veterans Association, an outdoor movie night with hot chocolate and treats, and a Jingle Bell Rock Nite featuring Roxborough’s own Mitchell St Phillbillies. Luminaries will line the park each evening, creating a warm glow, and Santa will visit again during the final weekend, complete with a last-chance Toys for Tots collection.
Happy Holidays from ROX also puts a big spotlight on local businesses. For Small Business Saturday, the Snowflake Scavenger Hunt turns Ridge Avenue into an interactive adventure from November 29 through December 6. More than 20 artist-designed snowflakes are hidden in participating storefronts, and shoppers can scan QR codes at each stop to enter to win prizes from neighborhood shops and restaurants. At the end of the hunt, all snowflakes are collected and sold at Art on the Ridge, with proceeds supporting the gallery’s programming.
The main Happy Holidays from ROX Tree Lighting and Celebration takes place Sunday, December 6, from noon to 7 p.m. at Roxborough Pocket Park and Krams Avenue. Expect live music from Huston West, a holiday market, a dance showcase, an Ugly Sweater Contest, Santa’s grand arrival on a Philadelphia Fire Department truck, caroling with the Roxborough Men’s Choir, and the beloved Roxborough Tree Lighting Ceremony with Santa and Captain James Kimrey. Families can also create ornaments for the Wishing Trees, adding their hopes and dreams for the coming year to a shared community display.
Art lovers will want to spend time at the new, permanent home of Art on the Ridge at 6155A Ridge Avenue. The gallery—powered by the Roxborough Development Corporation and Baker Street Partners—features work from Northwest Philly artists and makers across more than 20 mediums, from custom jewelry and photography to quilts, crochet, and paintings. The space not only supports local creatives but also helps bring more energy and foot traffic to Ridge Avenue as a thriving arts and business corridor.
Getting to Roxborough for all this holiday fun is easy. The neighborhood is a short drive from Center City, University City, Chestnut Hill, King of Prussia, and the Philadelphia International Airport, with convenient parking lots at 465 Leverington Avenue and 514 Dupont Street. You can also arrive by bike via scenic Kelly Drive, by multiple bus routes that run right through the neighborhood, or by SEPTA’s Manayunk/Norristown Regional Rail Line. However you travel, Happy Holidays from ROX is a festive, family-friendly way to shop local, support community traditions, and celebrate the season together.
