Penn State University officials recently announced that the university tied for No. 17 among U.S. public institutions and No. 39 among all U.S. universities in the 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings. The university also ranked No. 108 worldwide, placing it in the top 5% among 2,191 ranked universities globally.

“Despite almost a hundred new institutions entering the rankings, our position remains strong. This is a reflection of the fact that our faculty continue to conduct impactful, cutting-edge research while providing a world-class teaching experience for our students,” said Sabine Klahr, vice provost for Penn State Global, in a Penn State news release.

In the 2025 Center for World University rankings, Penn State ranks 57th globally in education quality, employability, faculty, and research. Penn State also placed No. 8 among all U.S. public universities and No. 82 in the world in the 2026 QS World University Rankings.

According to Penn State's news release, the university's $1.3 billion research enterprise significantly boosts its global reputation. Penn State's research work includes contributions in medical technology, infrastructure, semiconductor packaging, and sustainability.

Penn State's news release further notes that its research has led to innovations such as helping patients with broken ribs heal faster; creating early warning systems for failing pipes, landslides, and sinkholes; and developing international initiatives for sustainable buildings and water security.

Penn State also ranked No. 3 in the United States and No. 64 worldwide in THE's 2025 Impact Rankings for sustainability efforts.
