John Sampson, a veterinarian and father of three, sprang into action after park-goers spotted the child in the secured section and raised the alarm. Despite safety barricades, the boy managed to access the closed monorail system, prompting immediate concern from guests and staff.
Sampson, driven by instinct and concern for the child’s welfare, scaled a concession stand and climbed onto the monorail to reach the frightened boy. Ignoring his fear of heights, Sampson focused solely on the child’s safety, successfully guiding him to safety within seconds.
"A kid is walking on the monorail, and obviously, panic kind of sets in a little bit," Sampson said to GMA. “When you have that, like, kind of dad instinct, it doesn't matter if it's your kid or not, it's a child that you want to make sure they're safe as possible."
Hersheypark staff quickly responded, ensuring the boy was unharmed and reunited with his family.
Park officials praised the swift actions of both Sampson and their team, reaffirming the park’s commitment to guest safety. Later, Sampson was personally thanked by the boy and his family, emphasizing the strength of community and the importance of watching out for one another in public spaces.
This incident at Hersheypark serves as a powerful reminder of the impact one individual’s vigilance and courage can make, encouraging all guests to remain alert in emergencies for everyone’s safety.
