The University of Delaware's Division of Professional and Continuing Studies (UD PCS) announced it is accepting enrollments for its Foundations of Brewing Science and Brewery Operations Certificate course. The 10-week, online and in-person program serving hobbyists and aspiring brewing professionals begins on Sept. 24.

Taught by expert brewmaster Brad Adelson, the course focuses on essential brewing topics such as beer styles, raw materials, operations, safety, packaging, and quality control. Students will also participate in an in-person experiential learning opportunity at Delaware Park's 1937 Brewing Company. There, they'll gain firsthand knowledge and learn what it takes to work at a full-scale brewery.

Upon completion, students will receive a digital badge and applied skills that will support their further professional development in the brewing industry.

Francisco Rivera, a Philadelphia-based home brewer who completed the course during the spring, highlighted the scope of the course and the practical skills he gained.

“I've been brewing at home for eight years, mostly learning through trial and error,” Rivera said in a University of Delaware news release. “But I wanted to understand the science behind it and the business side, too. This course gave me both.”

Rivera added that the blend of online learning and the in-person brewery visit combined to create a dynamic program experience.
