Field of Screams in Lancaster County Celebrates 33 Years of Haunting Tradition

A Lancaster County attraction is celebrating its 33rd season of haunting in 2025. Field of Screams is back again for a fall tradition that will add a terrifying touch to the season's celebrations.

What began on a small scale on a family farm nearly three decades ago is now a full-scale attraction. The venue features the original Haunted Hayride, the creepy Den of Darkness, the twisted Frightmare Asylum, and the outdoor horror trail, Nocturnal Wasteland. Extreme Blackout, a one-night-only event, has attracted horror fans from across the country seeking spine-tingling thrills.

According to an Aug. 4 news release, Field of Screams creates all of its attractions, from animatronic figures and costumes to sets and technical effects, on-site. The result is an ever-changing macabre horror show that changes every year.

“It's wild to think how far we've come,” said Gene Schopf, co-founder of Field of Screams, in the release. “We never set out to be the biggest or the best — we just wanted to build something memorable. The fact that people come back year after year, some from hours away, is incredibly humbling.”

Field of Screams has been profiled by USA TODAY, The Travel Channel, BuzzFeed, and several national media outlets. It has appeared frequently on top 10 lists for haunted attractions. 

In addition to providing entertainment, Field of Screams also gives back in support of the community. Over the years, it has collaborated with nonprofits, hosted special charity nights, and supported dozens of community causes, from fire departments to youth sports leagues. The attraction also hosts the Zombie Fun Run, with proceeds supporting the PA Breast Cancer Coalition.
