The 9.3-acre park is one of the city's most visited public parks. The multimillion-dollar plan to rehabilitate the park was bid out for design in July 2023. Johnson Mirmiran & Thompson (JMT) has been chosen to bring Ash Park's new design into being.
With the wrap-up of the design phase, the project shifts to the following work, which will take place over a four- to six-month period:
- A new common area for gatherings
- A new pavilion with seating area and restrooms
- A splash pad to replace the pool, which hasn't operated in more than a decade
- Expanded play and recreation areas
- New landscaping and stormwater infrastructure improvements
- Renovated basketball courts, including a new third court
The third and fourth phases of the project will focus on upgrades to the soccer field and playground and the construction of a new pavilion for the picnic area
The rehabilitation of Ash Park has been made possible through the contributions of several funders:
- Chester County Preservation Partnership program
- Community project funding from U.S. Rep. Chrissy Houlahan and former U.S. Sen. Bob Casey Jr.
- Keystone Communities funding from state Sen. Carolyn Comitta
- Natural Lands and MCDC (Movement Community Development Corporation) with the support of Sen. Casey and state Rep. Dan Williams
- The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation of Natural Resources (DCNR)
“This park is an important part of the heart of Coatesville, and the City of Coatesville is a remarkably important part of the heart of Chester County,” said Houlahan in comments shared by MyChesCo. “It's because of all your input and hard work that we are here today, and it's my privilege to have played a supportive role through the Community Project Funding that helped make this project possible.”
