SEPTA has ended free weekend parking at all lots and garages, introducing $2–$4 daily fees to help fund repairs and address financial challenges. Learn how to pay and what riders need to know.

Philadelphia’s transit riders are facing a new change this summer: SEPTA has ended free weekend parking at all of its lots and garages. After four years of complimentary weekend parking—a move originally made to encourage ridership during the COVID-19 pandemic—drivers will now need to pay every day of the week.

Starting this week, parking at SEPTA’s surface lots costs $2 per day, while garage spots are $4 per day. The fees, which previously only applied on weekdays, now extend to weekends as well. According to SEPTA, this shift is part of a broader effort to address ongoing financial challenges and to support much-needed repairs and maintenance across its parking facilities (source).

Why the Change?

SEPTA had suspended parking fees during the early days of the pandemic to help bring riders back to the system. While weekday fees returned last fall, weekends remained free—until now. The agency says that the new, consistent fee structure will generate revenue to maintain and upgrade parking areas, which is especially important as budgets tighten.

Easier Ways to Pay

To make the transition smoother, SEPTA has rolled out a flexible new payment system. Riders can pay for parking using the SEPTA Park app, at on-site kiosks, or even by sending a text message. This variety of payment options is designed to make the process quick and convenient for everyone.

Increased Enforcement

To ensure compliance, SEPTA has deployed vehicles equipped with cameras to patrol lots and garages, checking for unpaid cars. Signs at every location clearly display the new rates and payment methods, so there’s no confusion for drivers.

What Riders Need to Know

  • Fees: $2 per day for surface lots, $4 per day for garages, every day.
  • Payment: SEPTA Park app, kiosks, or text.
  • Enforcement: Camera-equipped vehicles will monitor lots for violators.
  • Purpose: Revenue will go toward repairs and maintenance of parking facilities.

SEPTA’s move to end free weekend parking is just the latest in a series of changes aimed at stabilizing the agency’s finances. Riders are encouraged to plan ahead and take advantage of the new, easier payment options. For more information and updates on SEPTA parking, visit the official SEPTA website.
