Philadelphia is under a heat advisory as a dangerous wave of hot, humid weather grips the I-95 corridor and much of the East Coast. According to the National Weather Service, the heat index in the city is expected to approach 99 to 100 degrees over the next two days, with actual highs reaching 88°F on Wednesday and soaring to 92°F by Thursday. Fast-moving thunderstorms may bring heavy rain and strong winds both days, adding to the weather challenges.

This intense spell is part of a broader heat wave stretching from Chicago to New York, according to The Weather Channel, with humidity making conditions feel even hotter. While few locations may hit the 100-degree mark, the combination of high temperatures and humidity will make it feel like triple digits for millions along the East Coast.

Philadelphia recorded 19 days above 90 degrees last year, making 2024 one of the four hottest years on record through mid-July, reported the Philadelphia Inquirer. Last year, the city tied its all-time warmest average temperature, and the frequency of extreme heat is rising. Climate data shows a clear trend toward hotter, longer summers, with the urban heat island effect making conditions worse in densely built neighborhoods.

City officials urge residents to stay hydrated, check on elderly neighbors and pets, and seek out air-conditioned spaces or city cooling centers. The city has opened more than 150 cooling centers and pools to help residents cope with the heat. Relief is expected by Friday, but forecasts suggest another round of near-100-degree temperatures could return next week.

As climate change drives more frequent and severe heat waves, Philadelphia’s experience reflects a larger pattern affecting cities across the East Coast, according to NOAA Climate.gov.
