Drivers, beware: Beginning on Sunday, June 8, if you blow through the red light at 20th Street and JFK Boulevard, you can expect a $100 fine via red light camera.

In March, the Philadelphia Parking Authority (PPA) announced a 45-day warning period for drivers captured on video running the red light. This warning period was extended to June 8 after PPA officials originally stated that the grace period would end on Monday, May 12.

According to an NBC10 Philadelphia report, drivers caught by the automated camera going through the intersection with the red light activated will receive a $100 fine in the mail.

Officials from the PPA said the new camera is part of a network of approximately 150 cameras that monitor more than three dozen intersections in Philadelphia.

While the cameras are designed to enhance public safety and save lives, they also generate revenue for the state.

"In FY 2024, the Red-Light Camera Program provided $23,038,615 to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation's Transportation Enhancements Grant Program," the PPA said in its March statement. "Approximately half of those funds are used for safety improvements in the Philadelphia area."
