Surveillance video from a Chester County gas station shows a tree smashing onto an SUV along Pennsylvania Route 52 on Monday morning, April 7.
Emergency officials who responded to the incident identified the SUV's driver as 40-year-old Christina Mattoscio, who was wearing a seatbelt at the time the accident took place. Pennsylvania State Police said that Mattoscio sustained injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
CBS News Philadelphia obtained the video from the KARCO gas station in the 1600 block of East Street Road in Kennett Square. In the video, Mattoscio stopped her 2017 Ford Escape behind another vehicle. Seconds later, a tree by the side of the road crashes onto the back of her SUV on Lenape Road before East Street Road in Pennsbury Township.
A CBS News Philadelphia crew visited the impound lot where Mattoscio's SUV now sits. The vehicle's wreckage still had leftover tree bark on top of its caved-in roof.
The gas station owner, who did not wish to be identified, spent part of the day cleaning up debris. He said he was concerned for the driver and added that he worries about more trees toppling along this heavily trafficked part of Route 52.
"There are a lot of trees that can fall down at any time. ... Last month, there was one big, huge tree that fell down on the same street, just a few feet away," the owner said.
Pennsylvania State Police verified that PennDOT responded to the accident scene and reset a damaged sign on the shoulder of the northbound lane.
CBS News Philadelphia contacted PennDOT to ask about planned tree maintenance projects along this stretch of Route 52, but no details were reported.
