To quote Santana "Man, it's a hot one. Like seven inches from the midday sun." A hot week this week with every day hitting 90 degrees or above. There's no better time to open up pools for the summer, and in Philly, that's exactly what's happening this week.
There are benefits to living in the suburbs, and benefits to living in the city. To each their own. One of the benefits of living in Philadelphia, is access to 60 public pools spread throughout the city. Where I live there are 5 different pools within walking distance of my house that we can frequent throughout the hot summer months to help stay cool. All offer free pool hours and even kids swim lessons each summer.
Despite a lifeguard shortage, all 60 of Philadelphia's public pools are expected to open up this summer, and 25 of the 60 will open this week. “It takes months of preparation across City departments to get our beloved public pools ready for a summer of fun,” said Mayor Cherelle L. Parker. “I’m grateful in particular to all of the Parks & Rec staff who recruited and hired lifeguards and pool staff; painted and fixed pools; and ensured they are welcoming for deserving residents. Together, we will make Philadelphia the Safest, Cleanest and Greenest Big City in America, with Economic Opportunity for All.”
Philly Pool Hours
- Pool schedules and hours vary based on available staffing.
- All open pools offer public swim from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Additional public swim hours vary by site. Certain times are designated for swim lessons, swim team, adult swim and other specific groups.
