I was half-listening to NBC10 the other morning when I heard my name: Kristen Herrmann. The story was about a woman from South Jersey. She has the same name as I do, except she spells her name Kristen Herman, and she is in need of a kidney.
The more I heard of the story NBC10 was reporting, the more similarities kept popping up between this Kristen, and myself.
- We share the same name.
- Kristen is a mom of two young children, including a 1 year old son. I have a 1 year old daughter.
- Their younger child also shares my birthday, October 15th.
- Kristen is a nurse, and an army veteran. My mom is a lifelong nurse and an air force veteran.
I couldn’t help but compare myself to Kristen, and I immediately felt so incredibly empathetic to her situation.
I was blessed to have a relatively easy childbirth experience in March of 2022. When Kristen gave birth on October 15th later that same year, she developed a sepsis infection immediately after. What should have been one of the happiest experiences of her life, has now also put her life in jeopardy. The sepsis infection affected her kidneys, and she is experiencing chronic kidney failure. Kristen is forced to undergo hours of dialysis every day, just to live, and she is in urgent need of a kidney. The search is on for someone willing to donate.
They’re a beautiful family, and they’re looking for a miracle. Searching for a match. According to NBC10, for a number of reasons having to do with immunity, Kristen’s chance of finding a compatible match is very slim. The person must be compatible, with an O blood type, and willing to donate a kidney.
