When moving to a new state, the first thing people often do it look up local crime rates to see which areas are safest and which have the worst rates for crime. Now, a new study has determined that Pennsylvania has one city that has among the highest homicide rates in America.

Wallethub has released a new study that lists the cities with the biggest homicide rates in America. "The homicide rate in the U.S. experienced a rapid increase during the past few years, so much so that President Joe Biden made tackling the problem a priority," the study states. "Alarmingly, homicide rates have risen by an average of roughly 10% in 45 of the most populated U.S. cities between Q1 2021 and Q1 2023, and are still rising."

To find out which cities have the biggest homicide rate problems, "WalletHub compared 45 of the largest U.S. cities based on per capita homicides in Q1 2023, as well as per capita homicides in Q1 2023 vs. Q1 2022 and Q1 2021." They add that "data from this study is based in some cases on preliminary police department crime data, which is subject to reclassification upon further investigation."

Before we get to our city, let's look at the city with the No. 1 highest homicide rate in America. According to Wallethub, that's Memphis, Tennessee. That's definitely not what I expected. According to the study, Memphis has a total score of 94.10. No. 2 is New Orleans, Louisiana. Then, No. 3 is Richmond, Virginia; No. 4 is Washington, D.C.; and No. 5 is Detroit, Michigan.

So, which Pennsylvania city has one of America's highest homicide rates? It's Philadelphia, which falls at No. 13 on the tally with a total score of 45.02. At least that's well before the No. 1 worst city, which was Memphis. Find the full tally of all the cities with the highest homicide rates in America here.

Pennsylvania is a great state, but there are some areas where you have to be a bit careful. If you're wondering what, technically, are the most dangerous cities in the Keystone State, we have the list for you.

The crew at RoadSnacks.net has put together a list of the most dangerous cities in Pennsylvania for 2022. One comment in the study cracked me up, with the writer stating, "Surprisingly, Pennsylvania has done a fair job of keeping it's crazy spread evenly across the state." I guess they're saying no one part of the state is markedly more dangerous than another. They even joke that the more dangerous areas might have something to do with a Steelers, Eagles rivalry. You never know, right? They add, "Some might wonder why we produced this list. Well, one goal is to definitely help people navigate these dangerous cities when trying to make an informed decision on what city they should call home."

Even if you city falls on this list, not all is lost. I mean, there are good and bad areas in every city across America. "We're not saying that there aren't little pockets of goodness in these Pennsylvania cities," the study states. "There are neighborhoods and shopping centers in these cities that are working hard to make life easier. And it's not entirely Pennsylvania's fault. They have the 6th highest population per capita. As with most situations, there's bound to be problems with that many people: especially that many Pennsylvanians in one area."
