Pennsylvania, I personally think, is a great place to live. But, as it turns out, people are moving out of this state.

United Van Lines has released its annual 2022 National Movers. In it, they discuss which states are getting the most new residents and which states are losing people.

First, which states are people loving? No. 1 on the list is Vermont, followed by Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Delaware, North Carolina, Washington, D.C., South Dakota, New Mexico and Alabama. According to the study, those states are the ones attracting the most new residents right now.

Unfortunely, our state is on the other end of the spectrum. The study found that many people moved to lower-density areas because of different lifestyle preferences, including career changes, retirement and wanting to be closer to family. The No. 1 states people are moving out of is New Jersey. That's followed by Illinois, New York, Michigan, Wyoming, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Nebraska, Louisiana and California. So, Pennsylvania is No. 6 on the list. The study found that even though, mainly, residents are continuing to leave the northeastern U.S. region, certain states such as Vermont and Rhode Island are seeing much more inbound migration than outbound. The study also found that more Baby Boomers and Gen Xers moved than any other age group last year. Reportedly, people over the age of 55 accounted for more than 55% of all inbound moves tallied by United Van Lines in 2022.

"Key factors like retirement, wanting to be closer to family and lifestyle changes influenced by the pandemic along with current housing prices drove moving patterns in 2022," Michael A. Stoll, economist and professor in the Department of Public Policy at the University of California, Los Angeles, said in a statement. Find the full study here.
