Bride Dies At Wedding, So Her Sister Married The Groom
In a disturbing series of unfortunate events, a groom married the sister of his bride after she collapsed and died earlier in the wedding ceremony.
A woman named Surabhi and a man named Mangesh Kumar were getting married in a Hindu ceremony in Uttar Pradesh, India when she collapsed, Times of India reported.
Surabhi suffered a heart attack during the jaimala, the exchanging of garlands by the bride and the groom in an Indian wedding. After the doctor pronounced the bride dead, the groom asked her parents to formalize his marriage with their younger daughter, Nisha, “then and there, to which the family agreed.”
In India, about 90% of marriages are arranged, USA Today reports. Radha Patel, the founder of matchmaking site for South Asians Single to Shaadi, said it’s likely the families arranged for the sister to marry the groom because “they wanted to keep it in the family.”
Suarabh, Surabhi’s brother, was irritated by the situation saying, “It was a bizarre situation as the wedding of my younger sister took place while the dead body of my other sister was lying in another room.”
Ajab Singh, Surabhi’s uncle said, “We have never witnessed such mixed emotions. The grief over her death and the happiness of the wedding has yet to sink in.”
