Per a press release, the coins were created in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Rolling Stones' iconic logo as was "...the brainchild of a collaboration between The Crown Mint and Bravado – the Universal Music Group brand management and merchandising division for The Rolling Stones."

In a statement, a spokesman from The Crown Mint said, "We are beyond thrilled with the opportunity to work with The Rolling Stones and the Government of Gibraltar to bring these coins to life. Everyone, everywhere has a favorite Stones song and the logo itself is the ultimate calling card of Rock N’ Roll. All of this adds up to make a no-brainer collectible coin."
