Longtime Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek has died at age 80. The show’s official twitter account made the sad announcement. They tweeted, “Jeopardy! is saddened to share that Alex Trebek passed away peacefully at home early this morning, surrounded by family and friends. Thank you, Alex.”

Trebek has hosted Jeopardy since its 1984 debut in syndication.

Trebek revealed in March 2019 that he had been diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer. Last year, he told USA Today that “The thought of the pancreatic cancer does not frighten me. I’m not afraid of dying. One thing they’re not going to say at my funeral as part of a eulogy: ‘He was taken from us too soon.’ I’m 79 years old. I have lived a good life, a full life and I’m nearing the end of that life. I know that. I’m not going to delude myself.”
