The VARIETY File

Krispy Kreme is doing some serious celebrating during National Doughnut week the first week of June this year: they’re giving away free doughnuts.

From June 1 to June 5, Krispy Kreme customers can get a free doughnut to celebrate national Doughnut Week; no other purchase is necessary.

The only limitations for National Doughnut Week are that customers can only get one free doughnut per day and that the free doughnuts can’t be ordered for delivery.

Krispy Kreme’s director of marketing said, “National Doughnut Day is one of our favorite holidays to celebrate, but with days starting to blur together, we want to make sure it’s easier than ever for fans to participate. That’s why, this year, we’re extending our beloved free doughnut tradition from one day to five days with the very first National Doughnut Week.”

For months, the concept of time and days has been a blur. That's why this year, we're changing National Doughnut Day to National Doughnut Week! That's right, you get to choose not only your doughnut, but the day to enjoy it.

National Doughnut Day is June 5.

It is on the first Friday of June of each year, succeeding the Doughnut event created by The Salvation Army in Chicago in 1938 to honor those of their members who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I.

The holiday celebrates the doughnut and many American doughnut stores offer free doughnuts on National Doughnut Day.

Historically, there are three other doughnut holidays, the origins of which are unsure. International Jelly-Filled Doughnut Day is widely recognized as June 8 (occasionally as June 9). National Cream-Filled Doughnut Day is celebrated on September 14 although there is also a National Boston Cream Pie Day observed October 23rd and buy a Doughnut Day occurs on October 30.
