Abby’s Weekend Preview: Feb 28th-Mar 1st
Happy leap day weekend Everyone!
Here’s my preview of fun events going on this weekend, including some great leap day celebrations!
- Hello Dolly! at the Academy of Music (Feb 28th- March 1st): This is the last weekend to see Hello Dolly at the Academy of Music as part of the Kimmel Center’s Broadway Philadelphia series. Called “Broadway’s Greatest Musical”, this musical- comedy classic is so much fun to watch. Kristen saw it and LOVED it, and recently featured two of the actors on her Saturday morning show BEN Around Philly. Check out the episode HERE and purchase your tickets for the show (while you still can) HERE.
- Atlantic City Boat Show (Feb 26th-Mar 1st) : Do you want to find the boat of your dreams? I’ve got the show for you. The Atlantic City Convention Center is hosting the Atlantic City Boat Show again this year with over 440 booths showcasing boats of all makes and models. Featuring awesome entertainment like Twiggy The Water-skiing Squirrel, a Virtual Fishing Simulator, and kids boating, there is so much to see and do at the Atlantic City Boat Show! Buy your tickets HERE.
- Bassem Youssef: Late for Democracy (Feb 28th-Feb 29th) : Punch Line Philly is hosting Bassem Youssef, who will be putting on his comedy show this weekend. Youssef has had a crazy life so far. He was a heart surgeon, then created the most popular political satire show in the Middle East, Al Bernameg, and was dubbed the Jon Stewart of the Middle East because of it. Unfortunately, he seemed to have ticked off the wrong kinds of people. He was arrested, interrogated and eventually had to escape a dictatorship in his home country, Egypt, to find refuge in America. He has been touring his unique one man show and telling his story through stand up comedy, storytelling and multimedia. The show is funny, engaging, and gives a different perspective into what it means to be funny in the wrong time and place. Buy your tickets HERE.
- The Brick Bar (Feb 28th-Feb 29th) : This event is TWO NIGHTS ONLY! The Independence Seaport Museum made a pop-up bar that is fun for everyone. The bar will feature sculptures made completely from building blocks as well as an abundance of blocks for people to shape into their own creations. There will also be local DJ’s spinning tunes all day and night. Ticket prices include entry for 90 minutes in the bar, ping pong, and amazing Instagram photo opportunities to give all your friends some serious FOMO. Secure your tickets now.
- Philadelphia Flower Show (Feb 29th-March 8th) : The PA Convention Center is hosting the Philadelphia Flower Show. This year the theme is “Riviera Holiday” where you can explore Mediterranean inspired gardens with an incredible variety (and amount) of flowers. The flowers are set up in different design concepts, so you can get ideas for your garden at home. Tickets are available HERE.
- Philly Bierfest 2020 (Feb 29th): Tomorrow, the the German Society of Pennsylvania will be hosting its 9th annual authentic German Bierfest. Philly Bierfest is hands down the best beer festival in the city, featuring beer and food from every German restaurant in Philly, plus unlimited German style beer from over two dozen breweries. The afternoon is packed with beer, food, music, entertainment, and LOTS of fun. Check out Kristen’s BEN Around Philly episode featuring Bierfest HERE, and buy your tickets (while you still can) HERE!

The 9th annual ‘Shine A Light’ fundraiser to benefit Light Up the Queen is happening on Leap Day this year, Saturday, February 29th. The theme of the night is the year 1980, and attendees are encouraged to dress the part. Find tickets and more information at https://lightupthequeen.org/shinealight/. Learn more about it in last week’s BEN Around Philly episode.
- 2nd Annual Chili Cook-off (Mar 1st) : Are you a fan on Chili? If you are, this is the event for you. The William Way LGBT Community Center is hosting its 2nd annual Chili Cook-off this Sunday. My dad and I will be in the cook-off, showing off our famous chili. Tickets get you admission, chili samples from all the contestants, and one beverage. 2SP Brewery has donated beer for the event.
