Look…no one really loves going to the doctor or undergoing various tests, but in order to be at your optimal best when it comes to your health, these things are necessary.
In honor of Men’s Health Month, here are eight health screenings every men should get and the ages they should get them.
Prostate Cancer: Might as well get this one out of the way. Typically, this screening begins at age 50, however, if you have a family history of prostate cancer, you should begin screenings at 40.
Colorectal Cancer: Like Prostate Cancer screenings, Colorectal Cancer screenings are typically recommended to start at age 50 and is usually done via a colonoscopy.
Skin Cancer: Men are more likely to develop skin cancer than women. That considering, a screening involving an examination of your moles is typically recommended during your yearly physical. Of course, if you find a discolored/irregularly shaped mole on your body, get it checked out ASAP.
Type 2 Diabetes: Undiagnosed Type 2 Diabetes can cause a whole slew of problems, and many Americans don’t know they even have the disease. Typically, men beginning at age 45 should be screened every three years.
Testicular Cancer: This form of cancer typically occurs between 20 and 54, and it is recommended that an exam happens during your yearly physical. Regular self-exams are recommended, because as with all cancers, early detection is the key.
Blood Pressure: Considering heart disease is the number one cause of death for men and women, this one is a no-brainer. You should always be aware of your blood pressure since it greatly affects your overall heart health and have it checked every year.
Glaucoma: As men age, the likelihood of developing glaucoma increases. The older men get, the more often they need to be screened for glaucoma. From 40-64, men should be screened every 1-3 years. After 65, however, a screening every year is recommended.
Cholesterol: A simple blood test will help you determine what your cholesterol levels are, and those typically begin at age 35.
