The guitar Jimi Hendrix played at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 -- the one he didn't smash and light on fire -- is going up for auction.
Heritage Auctions is putting the black Fender Stratocaster on the block June 17 in Beverly Hills, with a starting bid of $500,000 and expectations for bidding to reach at least $750,000. Hendrix played this particular Strat for the bulk of the festival set, swapping it out before wreaking havoc on another guitar during his "Wild Thing" finale that was captured on film.
The Strat that's for sale is reportedly owned by a private collector in the U.K. The auction, ironically, takes place during a 50th anniversary Monterey Pop festival that will feature performances by Phil Lesh & the Terrapin Family Band, Booker T's Stax Revue, Jack Johnson, Norah Jones, the Head and the Heart and more.
